Are the following patterns correct and natural?

1. A has become a better country than it used to be.

2. A is a better country than it used to be.

3. Compared with the past, A has become a better country.

4. In contrast to/with the past, A has become a better country.

In #3 and #4, you're comparing "the past" to "A."

Thank you very much. Are there any ways to use 'in contrast to' and 'compared with' correctly without changing what the original sentence means?" Also as for #1, is it all right to use the tense 'has become' and 'used to be' as I did?

You could substitute "how it was" or "how it used to be" with "the past" in those sentences. #1 and #2 are okay.
