comparative with the... the

The higher we go up, the thinner becomes the air.

I found that a dictionary cited the above sentence as an example to explain the "comparative with the ... the" structure. Is the inversion necessary? Which is more natural, compared with "The higher we go up, the thinner the air becomes."?

The two parts of the sentence should be parallel in word order,
ie "The higher we go, the thinner the air becomes."
