Without "than" to introduce the comparison group there is no reason to use "longer" or "more difficult". Comparison in itself does not automatically require a comparative form in the adjective or adverb.

I am not the anon who posted the last thread. But I am puzzled by this sentence"... they actually longer livesthan other insects". This construction is odd to me.
Yet another anonymous reader passing by. (ps: from NL, so I could be wrong, even more than others :-) I guess that was a mistake and should have been :
... they actually have longer lives than other insect.
