1) What usually follows this construction: 'less/more' X than it is Y'?

2) Is it usually an adjective phrase? What about a noun phrase like a?

a) Dancing is less a sport than it is an art.

b) Dancing is less difficult than (it is) enjoable

3) Is it a comparative clause?

Peter played as well as he has ever played



4) What does this comparative clause in bold modify? (the adverb as or the adverb well)?

Peter played as well AS HE HAS EVER PLAYED (WELL). " Peter played as (= to the degree) well as ( = in which) he has ever played (well). Peter played well (to the degree) (in which) he has ever played (well).

Peter played as well AS HE HAS EVER PLAYED (WELL).

I think that the comparative clause modifies the first "as."

Peter played as (= to the degree) well as ( = in which) he has ever played (well).

Peter played well (to the degree) (in which) he has ever played (well).

Peter played as (as he has ever played (well) ) well.

How did Peter play? - He played well.

How well did Peter play? - He played as well as he has ever played.

That`s the manner Peter played.

So as well as he has ever played is a manner clause, no comparative.
