Comparative clause: Than...

a. The flat bottom wok is more effective in conducting heat from the stove's flat electric coils than would be the case with a round bottom.



b. The flat bottom wok is more effective in conducting heat from the stove's flat electric coils than what is the the case with a round bottom.



c. The flat bottom wok is more effective in conducting heat from the stove's flat electric coils than the round bottom wok.



d. The flat bottom wok is more effective in conducting heat from the stove's flat electric coils than what would be the case with a round bottom.



e. The flat bottom wok is more effective in conducting heat from the stove's flat electric coils than a round bottom wok is effective.

Which of these are incorrect and why?

I think your latest is fine.
I hear the implied conditional as "if you used it."
There's nothing to indicate that you've had any real life experience with either one.
The whole thing could be theoretical (or "hypothetical," if you like hypos.)

Indeed. I agree with the implied conditional you fashioned.

However, why then have we got 'is' being used in the first part of the sentence? Shouldn't it be two is's or two would's?

And why not 'would be the case with' (the writer's original)?
