Comparative?

He's much older than he looks.
He's older than he looks.

My grammar books says the first sentence is correct. Why makes the second one incorrect? I need an explanation.

In my grammar book there is a question like this:

He's ---- older than he looks.

A- much
B- more
C- ---

Answer key says the correct option is A. I think the question or answer key is wrong.
