There are 3 appraoches to language learning according to Lightbown and Spada. They are: naturalistic, tradtional and communicative. Communicative approaches are more focused on the teaching language through interaction and negoiation of meaning. The focus is not structure, but rather meaning.
Error correction should be limited as communicating the message is more important than a focus on structure. Error correction is typically only used in situations where the meaning is obscured.
Learning is typically not sequenced and students acquire structure through repeated exposure to the language.
There are a variety of language discourse materials and real life materials.
Finally the emphasis is on comprehension lowers the pressure on the students. Every effort is made to exclusively use the L2 of the classroom.
