Common/common place

When I was still a student a millennium ago, a student said

-The plot is common. (=not special; seen very often)

Some people say common is wrong and it should be commonplace; but I think they are just the same. Do you agree?

That's fine.

Note also that "common" is much more common than "commonplace."
