Common table

Would I be correct if I said a common table is a table on which every dish is common?
Such phenomenon is common in the Chinese dining culture, whereas in Western cultures everyone orders himself/herself.
So, my second question is how do you call the opposite of the common table phenomenon ? Is there a particular phrase?
Thanks.

Hi That's interesting. UK dining customs are influenced by the Norman conquest, so one phrase that is used occasionally is French: table d'hote. That is a menu that is chosen by the place at which you are eating and is served to all guests who choose it The opposite is also French: à la carte.

The opposite is also French: à la carte. That means you choose your own dishes (and, of course, it is more expensive)

Although 'common' can have the meaning of 'shared by the community', most native speakers of English would not understand that sentence.

You need to say something like Everybody serves themselves from all the dishes on a "common table". I have put the

There are some "family style" restaurants, where they bring platters for the table to share. This can be a fun way to meet people if you choose to be seated at a table for 8 or 12.

You could also say "Let's just get a bunch of things and then we'll all share."

"every dish is common" means every dish is ordinary, unremarkable. You don't mean that. You mean "every dish is shared".

Likewise, "common table" is not an English expression. Where I live we call it "family style".

The opposite might be called
