If it refers tot the third planet from the Sun, I would say, yes, it's a proper noun because it's the name that us humans gave to our own planet.
If, however, 'earth' is used in the meaning of 'dirt' – which is most frequently heard in the US I learnt once – maybe 'soil' is a better synonym – I would
