commit to V ing or v 1

Hi all,

I have a question. I was taught by my teacher that "commit to" should be followed by V ing. But then, I read this example in the dictionary:
They were committed to follow orders

Is that sentence okay? Is yes, when to use V ing, and when to use v 1?

Thanks heaps

Liya
