Commissione and flood

"Through her younger son, she learnt of a forty-five miles north of California which was to be flooded to make a reservoir to supply the rising demand of water of California's population. She photographed the devastating changes in the valley in 1956-7. Her photos of the Berryessa Valley stand as a clear indictment of the break-up of a rural community. Life originally commissioned the story but abandoned it to cover a flood in Texas. The photographs were finally exhibited under the title Death of a Valley in the San Francisco Museum of Art..."

What is this flood mean here? Is it the real one as great amount of water? Or it has a metaphorical meaning? And how do you rephrase the whole sentence?

Top answer

This is a good question, and there is no metaphore here. When a dam is constructed, water is trapped behind its walls and a man-made lake is created. The action of barricading the water floods previously dry land.

What about Life magazine? What is it doing exactly here? It means that Life agrees to publish the photos first, and then avoids to do that? If so, why?

Sorry if I ask too much, I really did'n get it.

It means that Life Magazine intended to publish the photos of the man-made flooding of the land behind the new dam, but decided to publish a story about a flood in Texas instead.
