Commenting on statements made in the past

Hello,
my friend and I were watching a game of sports when one of the players fell after being tackled. "Let's see if he wants to get up," he remarked. Upon seeing him continue playing after standing up, my friend followed up with "he did."
My intuition tells me that this can't be correct. Any explanation as to why this is right/wrong would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
