First of all, the author claims that the medication treats the cause of depression. He believes that the cause of depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain of the patient. This point is challenged by the lecturer, he says that it is a very simplistic to think that the chemical imbalances are the cause of the depression. Furthermore he points out that there are many factors play into depression. He gives an example of negative experiences such as death of a relative He thinks that experiences are the most common cause of depression.

Secondly, the author states that medications have been successfully used to treat depression for many years. He argues that medication helped many patients to live fulfill their lives. The lecturer rebuts this. He believes that medications are only short term solutions. He elaborates on that by mentioning that the patients are left to their depression once the effect of the medication is gone. He suggests that we should address the root of the depression instead of giving patient medication to ignore and forget their depression.

Finally, the author mentions that medication is one of the easiest treatment .He is of the opinion that patients have only to take once or twice his medication per day and this does not disrupt his daily life. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that medication has side effects that can disrupt patients ‘daily life such as cut of appetite and trouble in sleep cycle. He put forth the idea that not all patients interact the same way to medication.

In conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all the claims and theories in the reading passage.
