Commenter or Commentator?

Hi teachers,

I have a question regarding the two words 'commenter' and 'commentator'.

I found the word commenter in the oxford dictionary that explains the word thus:"A person who expresses an opinion or engages in discussion of an issue or event, especially online in response to an article or blog post"

I did not find the same word in other dictionaries and even I read somewhere that this word does not exist.

Can we replace the word 'commenter' with 'commentator'?

Here in his box, I see a red line under the word which shows error and when I right click I see a suggestion 'Commenters'.

Please clear the confusion.

With best regards

"commenter" is a pretty unusual word (much less common than "commentator"). However, "commentator" suggests a little more than "commenter". If someone merely makes a comment on a blog post, say, then that hardly makes them a "commentator".

I agree with GPY:

commenter -- anyone who makes a comment (rare/unusual word)

commentator -- usually someone who comments as a profession (a very common word)

On a casual social site you can call your visitors who comment anything you wish. I think commenter is clear enough (from its parts) that almost everyone will understand what you mean.
