Commas showing contrast

Is a comma always neccessary to show contrast? Is it as the writer's discretion

Her father struggles with complex emotions about the child he raised as his own, but to who he behaves in an unfatherly manner.

One days certainty, is the next days uncertainty and so night turns to day and this situation gets worse.

He claimed the accident wasn't his fault even though he was over the speed limit and that the other driver was to blame.

Is a comma needed before and that and and so to show contrast.

panda blue 483 Her father struggles with complex emotions about the child he raised as his own, but to who he behaves in an unfatherly manner. The comma is not logically necessary, but in practice it is the writer's choice whether or not to include it. "who" should be "whom".
