Commas, Semicolons, and a series.

His eyes were a blazing blue, his teeth a radiant white, and both contrasted dramatically against his bronzed face.

It would seem that a semicolon should follow "blue" because the first clause is independent, but it is also the first of a three part series, and I feel a semicolon there would unbalance the sentence. What do you think?
