commas or not

Hi,

Is it ungrammatical to use commas when writing:

"worked, and studied under, the"

Or the commas are optional in this case and I might as well keep them?

thanks,

I'd avoid commas here: I worked and studied under the Nobel prize winner.

Thanks! But the problem is that I already wrote it this way and was wondering if it would come across as a punctuation mistake or just as an idiosyncratic, but still acceptable, stylistic usage.

Yes, it would. A compound verb cannot be separated from its subject by a comma.
