Commas needed?

Do I need the comma after “was,” “Joe,” “is,” “was,” and “write” in the sentences below?


1. His comment was, “Whatever it takes.”


2. Mike said to Joe, “Peace out, dude.”


3. Her comment is, “Sidestep the issue and avoid the situation completely.”


4. His verbatim reply was, “Go to hell, you jerk!”


5. If I were you, I'd write, “An unheralded hero is a true one, indeed.”

All of those commas are conventional, though I’ve never liked the idea of putting a comma after a linking verb or between a verb and its object.

Doing so is really quite ridiculous.
