Commas, gerunds, and quotes

How do you punctuate the following, with or without the second comma?

He entered the room, saying, "I want to stay here."

or

He entered the room, saying "I want to stay here."

He entered the room, explaining, "I like it here because ...."

or

He entered the room, explaining "I like it here because ..."

etc. Do you add the second omma or not?

Strictly, the 2nd comma is needed, but it is being omitted by more and more editors these days, particularly with says/said .
