Commas for adverbial phrase in “that...” phrase

For example, is the use of commas in the following sentence appropriate? Is the first comma necessary?

“Findings show that, besides x, y is related to z.”

Not in my opinion. It's not wrong, but I'd leave it out.

Incidentally, the sentence is ambiguous. We don't know if 1 or 2 applies:

1 y is related to z and x is also related to z.
2. y is related to z and y is also related to x.
