I know that one needs to use a comma surrounding the name or title of a person directly addressed:


Thanks, John, I will.


Do we also need to use a comma in the following:


Thanks, John.


OR will Thanks John suffice?

Yes, put a comma. When we say this, there's normally a small hesitation before we say ...John and a comma acknowledges that pause.
