Commas around names.

The story follows his tense relationship with his daughter, Catherine. ( the name off here with a comma is this a rule or could it be dropped ?)

Do the commas around the name have to be repeated elsewhere since we have established his only daughters name in the first sentence ?

After his wife dies in childbirth he is left to raise his daughter Catherine alone.

Top answer

The comma says that Catherine is his only daughter, and the absence of a comma says that he has other daughters. The context in the second sentence allows you to omit the commas. It doesn't matter how many daughters he has.
