Commas and coordinating conjunctions (dependent clauses)

,but (dependent clause)
,so untill (dependent clause)
, and whenever (dependent clause)

Do we place a comma before a coordinating conjunction which starts a dependent clause either combined with a subordinating conjunction or without.

What are the rules surrounding this usage.

Is it just whether or not the dependent clause is essential or non-essential or short or long for it to take a comma.

Top answer

Coordinating conjunctions join independent clauses and are generally preceded by a comma unless the clauses are very short. Subordinating conjunctions join dependent clauses to independent clauses and may or may not be preceded by a comma depending on the clause's restrictiveness.
