Commas

Hi,

“My back is acting up again but I just had a nose surgery so I can’t get a massage.”

I know that I should put a comma before ‘but’ and ‘so’, but I’ve noticed that a lot of people ignore that rule when the sentence isn’t that long.

What do you think?

Thank you.

Ann225 What do you think? I think a lot of people ignore a lot of rules a lot of the time, and even more don't know the rules in the first place. Usage dictates grammar, is some guide to diction, but is no guide to style.

  • You need both those commas.
  • The rule is that if the independent clauses "are very short and closely connected" ( Chicago ), the comma can be omitted.
