Commas

Are here missing commas here: I will never forget the day when I was about to leave basic training how the Commanding Officer rounded up all new recruits and told us that we should be proud of what we had gone through because only one percent of Americans joined the military.

I think a good conversational alternative is "I will never forget how on the day when I was about to leave basic training, the Commanding Officer rounded up
