Commas

Hi! For some reason I can't seem to fully understand how to use commas. I would appreciate it if you guys would point out my comma mistakes in my essay. Also did I capitalize the title correct? Thanks JC

Why I Want to Become a Radiographer
I was laid off from my job November, 3 2003. This news was shocking and scary at first, but my employer later informed me of a government program that offered to send unemployed workers to school, and that made the news a bit easier to take. I was defiantly going to take government up on their offer, so I had to decide what I wanted my major to be. After thinking it over for a while, I decided to major in radiography. There are several reasons why I want to be a radiographer, including a more challenging career, better pay, and job security.
The first reason I want to be a radiographer is that I would like to have a more challenging career. My previous job was not challenging at all. It was manufacturing work, and I was required to learn what to do and then do it over and over all day. From what I have learned about radiography, I would be working in a high tech professional environment, which would require me to continue my education in order to keep up with new technology. A radiographer is responsible for the patents under his or her care and to use what he or she has learned to give the best care possible. As professionals, radiographers are given more respect and trust, enabling them to work with less supervision and to make decisions on their own.
Positions that require one to be responsible and trustworthy usually have a higher rate of pay, which is another reason why I would like to become a radiographer. Most people want more money and I am certainly one of those people. I worked hard at my last job to move up and I did move up somewhat, but because the company that I worked for was steadily going under and in danger of closing I never did get where I wanted to be. I have learned through research I have done that after training, which takes about two years, I can make much more as a radiographer than I ever could have as a factory worker.
The future of manufacturing in the United States has become unstable, which has lead to countless factory closings, especially in the textile industry. Most everyone needs a job, but in my situation I am glad I was laid off. Being laid off from my job has given me the opportunity to go back to school and train for a more secure future in the healthcare industry. A career in healthcare as a radiographer is secure, because as long as there are people in this country in need of medical treatment I will have a job. Unlike manufactures that look to far away countries such as China or Korea to satisfy their needs, people in need of medical attention will seek the closest facility available, which is in their own communities.
As I have mentioned, becoming a radiographer will be a great career change for me, because I want to do more satisfying work and use what I have learned to help people. I want a career that will provide more income and according to my research radiographers are compensated very well. And also I do not want to have to worry if I will have a job tomorrow. There will most likely always be a need for healthcare workers, and I think it is a great field of work to get into.

[/nq] I'm not exactly sure what radiographers do, other than use equipment sold by Coop, but to the extent that they interpret the images produced by the radiographical equipment, it seems to me that this is something that could pretty easily be outsourced, or offshored if you will, to The Folks In Bangalore(TM). Based on some TV commercial I saw (maybe for GE or something) I gather that we already have diagnostic medical personnel working at great distances from patients (note spelling).

  • Freck, I had to have some routine medical lab tests done a while ago (I believe in medical jargon the term is "labs"), and so I went to this place in da Loop where they drew my blood (using Vulcan Green from the expanded Crayola set, those jokers) and then sent it off to some place in the outer reaches of Ellanoy or W'scansin.

Yep. I missed this.
[nq:1]There should be a comma after "money".[/nq]
I agree with that. But I deleted this sentence, so I neglected the comma.

No problem there. But I'd probably leave it as is despite the rule, because the two are so closely related and
