Comma with "like" directly after a coordinating conjunction.
"I knew in the back of my mind that the casino wasn't the best place to be at two in the morning on a Tuesday, but, like a moth to a flame, I couldn't stay away."
Could any adjustments be made to the above sentence to improve its readability? The cluster of commas around "but" looks like it may be too many, but I feel removing one may be incorrect.
I have read in the Chicago Manual Of Style that there is no need to put a comma between two conjunctions, and I know that "like" can be a conjunction, but I don't think it's being used as one here. I'm also not sure if removing the comma between "but" and "like" would cause any ambiguity.
Top answer
In sentences such as that, I omit the comma before 'but'. ps. like' is not a conjunction in that sentence.

Even if it were, I'd still not use the first comma.
