comma vs. semicolon

Over the years, Cahokia people built more than one hundred earthen mounds of various sizes and functions around six open plazas ___ the remains of some of which can still be seen after five hundred years of erosion.

Should I use comma or semicolon for the ___ above?

Though using comma in this case seems more appropriate, I've learned that I should use semicolon to separate two clauses. How come?

It’s amazing that they could even come up with the ideas for their discoveries __ much less go out and prove them.
This is another sentences.
Though I tried to figure out when to use comma or semicolon, I still cannot be sure about those punctuations usage in some cases, such as the one above.
