Comma use

Am I right in thinking that I do not need a comma before "and" in this sentence?

"After I spoke these words, I felt a lump at the back of my throat and added"

Thanks in advance!

After I spoke these words, I felt a lump at the back of my throat and added:

“I can’t live like a woman anymore. I had to tell someone.”

You are right. You don't need a comma, but using a comma would not be wrong.

we use so many commas in French, so French speakers are likely to abuse with those signs also in English ^^

Do you think it works better without one?

And thank you! :-)

You're very welcome Emotion: smile

To me it does not make a difference in that sentence. Maybe it would be different in a long sentence.

As far as I know, in any sentence, putting a comma before the word "and" is never needed and is wrong. **** putting a comma after the word "and" is never needed and also never wrong.

As Rover_KE's said, before the word 'and' it's not incorrect. It's just a matter of personal preference. Putting a comma after 'and' is not always incorrect either.
