Comma use

,but life is full of problems and I had given my word.
My feeling is that two statements are made after ,BUT and it is prefeable not to use a comma befor AND. If it were ,BUT THIS AND THAT, nobody would dream of using a comma
This question does not seem to be covered in style manuals; the nearest they get is with compound verbs not needing a comma .
Is there a rule? a guideline?
