Comma usage in this passage - ??

Hi.

I'm having trouble with finding the reason why the comma in the passage below is there since together isn't a subordinating conjunction.

" Upon this rough bier they carried the body of their companion to the shore, together with such trophies of his last battle as they chose to send forth with him."

I'm certain it's written perfectly but I'm not too confident with my commas.

Hi, Let's assume the writer is actually saying this instead of writing it. He pauses there because he wants to give the listener a moment to absorb the rather lengthy information that he has just stated. The rest of the sentence then sounds a bit parenthetical, or even like an afterthought.

  • I wouldn't say it is wrong if you don't pause, but when the parts of the sentnce are long a pause helps the listener to understand more easily.
