Comma usage in a contrasting statement

Does the following sentence require a comma? "It is not flesh and blood but heart that makes us a family." If so, where? I think there should be commas around "but heart", though I'm not sure. I want to have this engraved on a gift and the recipient is a teacher, so I don't want to botch this. Thanks!

It does not need any commas and is better style without them in my opinion, but longer clauses may need them for clarity's sake. It is not flesh and blood alone , but heart and a stalwart belief in unity , that makes us a family
