Comma usage

Hello,

Are both of these sentences correct (regarding commas):

"The chances of his winning the lottery and finishing his project are very low."

"Apples, oranges, and especially mangoes (,) taste very good."

Thank you for any replies

Top answer

" Right. " It's not a great sentence. The mangoes are marched in at gunpoint and forced to wear "especially".

  • " Right.
  • " It's not a great sentence.
  • The mangoes are marched in at gunpoint and forced to wear "especially".
  • If you put the comma in there, "and especially mangoes" becomes parenthetical, robbing the list of its "and" and illogically comparing the two fruits apples and oranges to mangoes as if all three are of the same type, which is not what is meant and which is ungrammatical.
  • If it was "Tree fruits, especially mangoes, are very good", the problems would go away.
