Comma Usage

Hello,

I have a seemingly simple question about comma usage. I was told that the following sentence is incorrect and that the comma needs to be replaced by a period.

Thanks for getting back to me, here is the information you requested.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

It's up to you.

Thanks is an interjection, rather like eg Hello. As such, it is commonly followed by a comma.

eg Thanks, you are very kind.

If you add a few words to Thanks, as you have in your example Thanks for getting back to me, a comma at the end is still OK. But a period is also OK if you want to give the reader more time to think bout what he has j
