Comma Usage

Hi, I have a question about where to place a comma in sentences like this:

1."We're here to visit you," he said even though he wanted to go to the movies with his best friend instead.

and

2."We're here to visit you," he said closing the door behind him.

Can a comma be inserted after "he said" in both of the sentences? Or is it just a matter of where the writer wants a pause/their own preference?

Thanks.
