Comma usage

My 1st grade daughter has just taken a test on comma usage. There are several test and homework questions which seem to indicate that she has been taught incorrectly. I've never placed a comma between an adjecgtive and the noun it was modifying. Here are a few of my daughters assignments:

Instructions - Use correct punctuation.

1. The loud, hyper, boy was disrupting the class.

2. Betty bought some fresh, green, broccoli at the store.

3. We had sticky, dirty, hands after eating cotton candy.

4. The fast, strong, boy scored a touchdown.

5. We dug a deep, narrow, hole in our backyard.

The kids were taught to place a comma between the last adjective in the series and the noun. I would consider the enumerated items above to be incorrect. My daughter was taught otherwise. Please advise.

  • If the teacher persists in his/her wrong-headedness, do everything you can to get him/her fired.
  • If that's not possible, work out a scheme for somehow humiliating him/her in public.
  • Seriously, you'll have to be more diplomatic than that, but I'd say a discussion with the teacher is in order.
