Comma usage

Hi. I think (I could be mistaken) a comma can be used similarly to a dash, which means any extraneous content/material (is it a content/material anyway?) can be placed to add to the meaning of the part it is set beside. Would you say this is correct? Would you say there might be no restriction as to what grammar form it can assume (if I wrote correctly to reflect correctly what I wanted to say)?

It was out of people's way, content/happy inside the dog house, and I had one less thing to worry about.

The structure is OK in your example. I would certainly not give it universal validity, however.
