Comma to indicate word elision in a comparison sentence.

Is the following an acceptable/correct use of the comma? It is being used to replace "that" in a comparison sentence.

"He was yelling so loud, it's a wonder he didn't wake up half the neighbourhood."

Or can you get away with not using a comma at all?
