Comma Splice and Independent Clauses

In the following excerpt, is it acceptable to include a comma after "and"?

"In addition, he was well-practiced at acting healthy, and was able to hide his crippling pain from all except his doctors and closest relatives."

However, you could use a comma after and to isolate a parenthetical element from the rest of the sentence.

In addition, he was well-practiced at acting healthy, and, remarkably, was able to hide his crippling pain from all except his doctors and closest relatives.

True. Aside from that, I think we should take out the comma before and in both versions; there is no new subject in the second part.
