Comma splice?

Does anybody know if the following sentences are grammatically correct?

"A lion had come, its snarled mouth baring sharp teeth. The animal looked up, its eyes searching everywhere."

Is this a comma splice? Something else? Is there a subject missing? I use this type of construction all the time, and I’m not sure at all about it.

Thanks.

(I believe snarl is intransitive, so you'll need snarling mouth.)

Thank you so much! I'm going to look into participial clauses.

And great catch on "snarled". You saved me twice.
