Comma: Same consideration?

I think Clive told us something like (something to the effect?) if we have a long sentence, a comma can be used for the purpose of clarity. Could we say the same for questions?
eg,

How does it effect our consideration of, and response to what our friends write about us?

How about this?

How did they do, and why?

I see no need for any commas in your examples, particularly in the second, which is so short, but if you must, use two in your first example: How does it affect our consideration of, and response to , what our friends write about us?
