Comma required?

Hello everybody,

Is in the following sentence a comma required or not?

"In this dark hour exasperation and despondency are spread amongst the survivors of our tribe due to our situation."

Thx in advance

Hi, I wouldn't say a comma is mandatory, but I'd use one, possibly two. Clive

Thanks for your answer!

But where would you put it?

Like this? -> In this dark hour, (...)

The end phrase is really lame. I'd recast:

In this dark hour, the situation has spread exasperation and despondency among the survivors of our tribe.

Oh okay

sounds a lot better!

I've got another question concerning comma setting.

"After these terrible events, our parents and our teachers are clueless."

- Is this comma right or not?

Hi,

Yes, it's fine.

Yes.

Sometimes commas are mandatory (they change the meaning of a sentence, separate dependent clauses from the main clause and separate members in a list). But sometimes they are used to indicate pauses in natural speech.

Hi A-stars,

In broad terms, I would say that commas always indicate pauses in natural speech.

eg It's natural to pause briefly before saying certain clauses, or before saying each item in a list.
