Please tell me which of the following punctuation is considered more correct:
1) If the patient continues to have swallowing difficulty, she should be treated with antacids, and if her symptoms persists, an endoscopy may be necessary.
2) If the patient continues to have swallowing difficulty, she should be treated with antacids and, if her symptoms persists, an endoscopy may be necessary.
Here my question is as to the comma placement. Is it more appropriate before the and or after the and?
Top answer
Always always always before 'and', 'but', etc. 1 is right and 2 looks funny.
