Comma or Semi Colon... again..

I have another sentence here and I'm wondering whether to use a comma or a semi colon.

"Mary Warren cowered under the pressure of Abigail Williams(;) and to save herself, she created a lie about John Proctor being affiliated with the Devil."

I'm thinking smei colon, but im contemplating whether to remove the "and" proceeding it.

I appreciate all of the help that I have recieved from this forum. It's really incredible how much help you're accessable to in such short periods of time.

Thanx
