Comma or not?

Is this sentence correct?

"I'm basically sitting in my chair pretending to work."
or has it to be:
"I'm basically sitting in my chair, pretending to work."

If I don't put the comma there, wouldn't the word "pretending" describe the object char, which is incorrect in this kind of context, right?

Thank you!

No, it wouldn't.

Could you tell me why? I've read that the participle behaves like a "relative pronoun + verb"-phrase after an object. Why is this one different?

example:
"The boy waiting in the hall expected a phone call."

Common sense. Chairs are not sentient; they do not pretend to work.
