Comma needed after Thus or So?

Hello. I have five questions.

1. Should thus or so be followed by a comma? I know other transitional adverbs such as however are followed by a comma, but I'm not sure about thus or so.

2. Which of the following is right? "in this matter" or "on this matter" Here's a context: let's say I'd like to thank you for helping me with English grammar. Fill in the blank please. "Thank you for the time you've devoted __ this matter."

3. Is 'Thanks' less polite than 'Thank you'? Is 'Thanks' used more often than 'Thank you' when thanking someone you know well, as opposed to a stranger? Do you normally use 'Thanks very much' (I know people use 'Thanks so much')?

Thank you

1. No. In fact you are more likely to find a comma before both those words.

  • 2) In that context 'to this matter' is correct as 'to' collocates with 'time you've devoted'.
  • On/in this matter are possibilities in other contexts.

3) It's not really less polite but it is much less formal. Thank you is very formal. Thanks is more normal with people you know.
