Comma needed?

Hi,

I encountered a question in a highschool practice book.

We sat down at the table, ______ ______ to enjoy the delicious food.

The standard answer they gave is

We sat down at the table, and begun to enjoy the delicious food.

Why is the comma needed in this case?
