comma in zero, first ... conditional

Hey, do we have to put a comma in sentences like these?

0 conditional:
If you don't water plants, they die. or If you don't water plants they die.

1 conditional:
IF it is cold, we will stay at home. or If it is cold we will stay at home.

One book says that we put a comma but another book says that we don't have to. I am a bit confused by the instructions.
