comma difference

These sentences were correct in my grammar book, but I do not know what the difference is?

1. Only a few members were able to attend the convention: Henry, Karen, David, Mark, and Susan.

2. The art students were expected to supply the following: brushes, paints, paletts and pads.

Why was a comma not put after paletts?

Thanks

Hello Kwesch, and welcome to the forums. You are asking about the serial or Oxford comma. It's optional, but should be used consistently.
